Not every fiftieth needs a band. For the man who would rather win a game than make a speech, this card sets the board: an ivory knight and a black knight at the corners, a checkerboard running along the bottom, bronze flourishes, and a warm ivory panel for the message on charcoal paper.
The design fits a fiftieth, a sixtieth or any grown-up game night, and it works just as well for a serious chess kid turning twelve.
Set out four or five boards with timers and run a quick blitz tournament before dinner. Serve black-and-white food, a dark chocolate cake with a chessboard top, and whiskey or sparkling cider for the toast. A small wooden chess set for the winner and a pawn keychain for everyone else keep the theme going home.
