Loud is not the only kind of birthday. For the girl who wants pretty, this is the card: a pair of watercolor butterflies in lilac and rose at the top, small sprigs of wildflowers in the corners, and a flowing script headline across cream paper.
Her name goes in a plum script with a little curl of leaves at the front, and the date and the place follow in the same soft ink. Three things typed, and the invitation is ready to go out.
Hold the party in a garden or a park and keep the decorating light: paper butterflies on string between two trees, a flower crown station with silk blooms and pipe cleaners, and a cake with a few sugar butterflies on top. A midafternoon tea with lemonade and small sandwiches suits this one better than pizza. Two hours, and let the girls take their crowns home.
